A mother whose personal experience with autism sparked an advocacy movement is now reaching children directly through award-winning literature. The founder of ROCCOSJOURNEY transformed her family’s journey into educational resources that are changing how young students understand invisible disabilities.
The author’s commitment began when her first child, Rocco, received an autism diagnosis at age two, followed by a similar diagnosis for her second child. This experience propelled her to navigate the often complex world of disabilities, including school systems, therapies, and legal requirements.
Her first book, which won an International award in the children’s category, introduces autism to families new to the diagnosis. “It was written for families new to the diagnosis, to introduce autism into their younger household, siblings, even family members, friends, etc,” the author explains. “It not only explains all the different facets around the diagnosis but an insight into a family’s journey. This way it makes it more personal and hopefully some students can relate.”
The recently released follow-up, “A Very Special Spot: A reminder that not every handicap is visible,” targets even younger readers. Now available on Amazon and at Barnes & Noble, this book aims to teach kindergarten and first-grade students that disabilities aren’t always obvious. “This book emphasizes the importance of handicap spots and that they aren’t just for wheelchairs,” notes the author.
Beyond publishing, she envisions bringing these inclusive educational resources directly into classrooms. “My hope is to go into the school districts myself and read these books speaking about inclusion, teaching acceptance, and spreading education, the true goal of ROCCOSJOURNEY,” she shares. “I dream of seeing these books on the shelves in the schools and see the kids taking them out on their own, but more so practicing inclusion and compassion.”
The foundation she established has expanded beyond books to include innovative Emergency Service Presentations. This initiative educates first responders about effectively handling calls involving individuals with special needs. Rather than offering professional training, these presentations provide insights from a parent’s perspective, ensuring emergency personnel understand the nuances involved in such situations.
ROCCOSJOURNEY exists beyond traditional fundraising efforts. The author’s mission centers on creating meaningful dialogue about inclusivity and establishing a lasting legacy for those with invisible disabilities. “I believe I can make a difference in this generation, I believe in them. As a voice for the voiceless I know we’re being heard,” the author affirms.
For schools and families interested in fostering greater understanding of autism and invisible disabilities, the comprehensive resources at ROCCOSJOURNEY provide valuable educational tools that promote acceptance from an early age.
Through determined advocacy and educational publishing, this foundation continues to expand the meaning of inclusivity, creating pathways for children to develop empathy and understanding for peers with invisible disabilities.
