At a time when Brooklyn faces persistent food insecurity affecting thousands of households, a cannabis dispensary next door to Kings Plaza Mall has positioned itself as an unlikely community anchor. Society House Brooklyn, located at 2441 Flatbush Ave, has committed to providing over 1,300 meals to New Yorkers in need through targeted food drives—an approach that distinguishes it from typical retail operations in the state’s emerging cannabis market.
The business operates on a straightforward premise: a dispensary should do more than serve customers—it should invest directly in the neighborhoods it operates within. That philosophy translates into year-round programming rather than occasional charitable gestures. In January, proceeds from a Super Bowl event helped distribute over 110 meals at local food pantries. During the recent government shutdown, a hot food drive executed with the East Village Design District Foundation supported over 300 Brooklyn families.
Strategic Partnerships With Established Nonprofits
Rather than building philanthropic infrastructure from scratch, Society House channels resources through established community organizations with proven track records. The dispensary works with The Fortune Society, which since 1967 has supported formerly incarcerated individuals during reintegration. It also partners with the Off The AVE Foundation, which provides education and mentorship programs for Brooklyn children and families—including enabling safe Halloween trick-or-treating experiences for 200 children.

The recreational cannabis dispensary also collaborates with the East Village Design District Foundation to promote arts access and cultural development through exhibitions and educational opportunities. Organizations interested in partnership inquiries can reach out to [email protected].
Beyond Retail: A Cultural Hub for Mill Basin and Beyond
While Society House stocks the expected product range—flower, pre-rolls, vaporizers, edibles, concentrates, and CBD products—its physical space functions as something more than a point of sale. The community-focused dispensary hosts smoke and paint sessions, industry workshops, and cultural events designed to strengthen neighborhood bonds across Bergen Beach, Flatlands, Georgetown, Midwood, and Sheepshead Bay.
This dual identity reflects New York State’s broader social equity objectives in cannabis regulation, which emphasize rebuilding communities disproportionately impacted by enforcement policies. But Society House’s approach emphasizes direct, measurable impact over bureaucratic complexity—ensuring resources translate quickly into tangible community change.
The organization’s 8th Annual Holiday Toy Giveaway, scheduled for December 13, 2025, demonstrates the longevity of this commitment. It’s not a new initiative launched for publicity, but a tradition predating the dispensary’s current form—evidence of sustained community engagement rather than performative corporate responsibility.
Looking ahead, Society House plans to expand its food security work through sustained meal distributions and develop additional programming addressing youth mentorship and arts access. The goal isn’t simply to run a successful Brooklyn cannabis retail operation, but to demonstrate that commercial success and genuine community care can function as complementary rather than competing priorities in regulated industries.
