Gerry White, Dean of Academic Technology at ECPI University, has been awarded the prestigious Future Makers Award for AI & Emerging Tech in Education by Insider Weekly, recognizing his transformative work in integrating artificial intelligence and emerging technologies into educational environments.
White has distinguished himself as a leading advocate for responsible AI implementation in higher education, developing innovative approaches that enhance learning while preserving human creativity and critical thinking. His work spans multiple technological frontiers, including mobile applications, augmented and virtual reality, game development, and artificial intelligence systems that directly benefit student outcomes.
At ECPI University’s Virginia Beach campus, White pioneered an integration of gamification into traditional curricula through his creation of the Unification course. This innovative program used gaming concepts of rewards and experience points to motivate students, resulting in unprecedented levels of engagement where students worked voluntarily on projects for hours outside of class and expressed genuine enthusiasm for the depth of their work. The program covered essential skills from basic programming in different languages to 2D and 3D graphics, animation, audio production, and publishing across popular marketplaces.
White’s commitment to emerging technologies extends beyond the classroom through his volunteer work with educators nationwide. He regularly conducts workshops and training sessions, helping fellow teachers understand and implement AI and other emerging technologies responsibly in their own classes. His efforts align with national initiatives to prepare America’s workforce for an increasingly digital economy.
The dean’s approach to technology integration reflects his unique background, having transitioned from literature and philosophy to become a pioneer in educational technology. “I really don’t think technology for technology’s sake is a good thing,” White has stated. “We shouldn’t do something just because it’s cool or because it’s flashy. It has to help solve real world problems.” This philosophy has guided his development of practical applications that serve genuine educational purposes.
During his tenure at ECPI University, White has spearheaded the implementation of cutting-edge AI initiatives that transform traditional classrooms into immersive, personalized learning environments. These innovations adapt to diverse learning styles and individual needs, enabling students to engage with course material in dynamic, interactive, and meaningful ways.
He is also recognized as an author, having written “The Evolution of AI: Our Journey from Myth to Machine,” which explores how humanity’s oldest dreams gave rise to its most advanced technologies. His work bridges disciplines from literature and philosophy to computer science and futurism, helping educators and leaders navigate the rapidly shifting landscape of the digital age.
The Future Makers Award acknowledges White’s comprehensive approach to educational innovation, which includes his sponsorship of ECPI’s Research & Development and Gaming Clubs and his development of ai-based learning experiences. His initiatives have successfully demonstrated how emerging educational technologies can enhance traditional learning while maintaining academic rigor and promoting critical thinking skills essential for future workforce success.
