A growing movement to address mental health challenges in the food service industry has taken root in New England with the launch of Serving Up Support: Maine, a nonprofit organization dedicated to the wellbeing of hospitality workers.
Founded by industry professionals Nio DiPietrantonio, Garrett Kennedy, and Mary Foreman, the organization aims to challenge mental health stigma by providing vital resources to those working in an industry known for its high-pressure environment.
“Hospitality workers are the backbone of our communities, yet they face high levels of stress, burnout, and substance use challenges,” says DiPietrantonio. “By collaborating with like-minded organizations and businesses, we can ensure these workers have access to the resources and support they need to thrive.”
The organization operates through three core initiatives: a resource hub connecting workers to mental health resources and financial counseling; training programs covering mental health first aid and substance use awareness; and specialized support targeting the unique needs of LGBTQ+ workers, seasonal staff, and role-specific stress management.
Mental health concerns in the hospitality industry have gained increased attention in recent years, with studies consistently showing higher-than-average rates of anxiety, depression, and substance use disorders among restaurant and hotel workers.
Serving Up Support: Maine is actively encouraging partnerships with established organizations like The Burnt Chef Project and CHOW (Culinary Hospitality Outreach Wellness) to create what they call “a happier, healthier hospitality industry.”
The nonprofit’s short-term goals include launching new wellness initiatives, expanding their social media presence, and piloting in-person support groups by the end of 2025. Their long-term vision extends to national expansion and advocacy for policy changes within the industry.
For hospitality businesses looking to improve workplace mental health or industry professionals seeking resources, Serving Up Support: Maine offers a comprehensive approach through their resource hub focused on creating sustainable workplace practices.
The organization operates with values centered on empathy, active listening, and collaboration, ensuring that their services are delivered with “honesty, integrity, and authenticity” so that hospitality workers feel “seen, heard, and supported.”
