New York City’s nightlife industry gained a new advocate with the appointment of Joseph MacLellan to the city’s Nightlife Advisory Board. Mayor Eric Adams selected the Greenspoon Marder partner for a two-year term that extends through August 15, 2027.
The appointment positions MacLellan among a select group of advisors tasked with shaping policies for one of the world’s most vibrant entertainment sectors. The Nightlife Advisory Board serves as an independent body established by local law to support nightlife businesses, workers, and communities throughout the five boroughs.
MacLellan brings more than two decades of combined legal expertise and hands-on hospitality experience to the role. His background spans both sides of the industry equation—as an attorney specializing in hospitality and alcohol beverage law, and as a former business owner who has operated restaurants, retail design companies, and international sourcing offices.

“I’m honored to join New York City’s Nightlife Advisory Board and contribute to an industry that brings people together and strengthens communities,” said MacLellan. “I’m committed to helping shape policies that ensure nightlife remains a safe and vibrant space for all New Yorkers.”
The board’s mandate encompasses advising both the Mayor and City Council on matters affecting nightlife establishments across the city. Members work to balance multiple priorities including cultural expression, public safety, and economic development within New York’s diverse entertainment landscape.
For Greenspoon Marder’s Hospitality, Alcohol & Leisure Industry Group, MacLellan’s appointment represents significant recognition of the firm’s growing influence in the hospitality sector. The practice has expanded its national presence in recent years, with MacLellan’s expertise covering nightclub and restaurant owners, manufacturing companies, and businesses navigating the complex regulatory framework of alcohol beverage law.
“Over these last several years, our Hospitality, Alcohol & Leisure team has emerged as a national powerhouse in the hospitality space, and Joe’s appointment to the New York City Nightlife Advisory Board is a tremendous recognition of that momentum,” said Louis J. Terminello, Chair of Greenspoon Marder’s Hospitality, Alcohol & Leisure Industry Group. “I’m thrilled for Joe and the incredible exposure this opportunity brings—not only for him, but for our team and the continued growth of Greenspoon Marder’s New York office.”
The appointment comes at a pivotal time for New York’s nightlife industry, which continues to navigate post-pandemic recovery while addressing evolving community needs and regulatory requirements. Board members like MacLellan will play a crucial role in developing equitable policies that support business owners while maintaining quality of life for residents.
MacLellan’s dual perspective as both legal counsel and former hospitality operator positions him to understand the practical challenges facing nightlife establishments. His client roster includes startups, growth-stage companies, and established venues seeking guidance through regulatory compliance and business development.
The Nightlife Advisory Board’s work directly impacts thousands of businesses and workers across New York City’s entertainment sector, from Manhattan’s iconic clubs to Brooklyn’s emerging venues and Queens’ diverse nightlife corridors. Through his appointment, MacLellan joins other industry leaders and community representatives in shaping policies that will influence the city’s cultural and economic landscape for years to come.
