Operation Meraki has been recognized as the Best Veteran Transition & Wellness Organization of 2026, acknowledging its innovative approach to supporting service members, veterans, and their families through the often difficult transition from military to civilian life. The Ohio-based nonprofit has distinguished itself through peer-led, trauma-informed programming that prioritizes connection and dignity over conventional clinical models.
Founded and led by veterans who understand the challenges firsthand, the organization has served over 700 veterans through community-based initiatives designed to address mental health, emotional wellness, and the social isolation that frequently accompanies life after service. Rather than treating veterans as cases requiring intervention, Operation Meraki builds long-term relationships that allow individuals to rebuild confidence, direction, and identity at their own pace.
The organization’s work centers on three core pillars: Mental Health and Wellness, Employment and Empowerment, and Community Connection and Engagement. This framework supports a suite of signature programs including RESET, a peer support and mental wellness program; ReFocus, which uses therapeutic photography and storytelling; RePlant, a sustainable food and greenhouse-based community initiative; and the RESET Ready Room, a consistent safe space for veteran peer connection.
What sets the organization apart is its rejection of one-size-fits-all approaches in favor of programs grounded in lived experience and peer leadership. By removing barriers to participation and reducing stigma, the veteran-centered programs create environments where trust can develop naturally and participants can engage without fear of judgment or bureaucratic hurdles.
The organization’s founder and executive director, a combat veteran and 9/11 first responder, has delivered a TEDx talk on veteran transition and the gaps that exist after military service, contributing to national conversations on peer support and community-based care. This thought leadership has helped establish Operation Meraki as a trusted voice within the veteran support ecosystem and influenced broader discussions on redefining strength after service.
Looking ahead, Operation Meraki plans to establish a permanent headquarters to serve as a centralized hub for veteran programs, training, and community engagement. The organization aims to expand its model regionally and nationally while preserving the relational, grassroots approach that has made it effective. Through advocacy, education, and continued program development, Operation Meraki continues working to ensure that no veteran has to navigate life after service alone, staying true to its founding values of integrity, service, authenticity, and community.
