A trauma response organization that operates at the intersection of emergency services and community healing has returned from search and rescue operations in the Texas Hill Country, where recent flooding demanded specialized teams capable of navigating challenging rural terrain along swollen rivers.
RISEUP Phoenix Trauma and Crisis Institute, working through its nonprofit partner Battle2be, deployed tactical response teams to assist in recovery efforts following the devastating floods. The organization, which describes its approach as “boots-on-the-ground and heart-in-the-fire,” represents a growing movement in trauma-informed crisis response that extends far beyond traditional emergency services.
The Texas deployment marks the latest in a series of major disaster responses over the past year. The organization previously mobilized teams to North Carolina, New Mexico, Florida, and Houston, responding to everything from natural disasters to community crises. Their work extends beyond immediate emergency response to include critical interventions at local schools following teen suicides, providing debrief and aftercare services to affected communities.
At the helm of this expanding operation is Krista Fee, who has recently been nominated for an honorary doctoral degree. Fee has emerged as a leading voice in active shooter prevention and response, community safety initiatives, and anti-trafficking efforts. Her work spans the full spectrum of crisis management, from prevention and preparation through protection, resilience, response, and recovery.
The organization’s unique structure divides its services into distinct “rooms” within what they call the RISEUP Phoenix house. Each room serves different populations united by trauma experience: first responders and veterans dealing with occupational stress, women surviving trafficking and violence, children and families preparing for potential crises, and couples navigating trauma-impacted relationships.
Central to their approach is the RISEUP Framework, a tactical system for healing and growth that addresses relationship building, identity recovery, safety establishment, emotional intelligence development, breaking free from destructive patterns, and discovering purpose through adversity. This framework underpins all their educational offerings through the RISEUP Phoenix Academy, which delivers trauma-informed training via online courses, publications, podcasts, and intensive coaching programs.
The nonprofit’s crisis response capabilities include rapid-deployment teams trained in trauma-informed care, capable of mobilizing quickly when disasters strike. Their Community Safety Education programs equip schools, families, and professionals with prevention and crisis-readiness tools, while their Responder and Family Support Programs provide mental wellness and trauma recovery training for those who serve on the front lines.
One of their most distinctive initiatives is the Ferryman Project, a memorial mission ensuring that service members and first responders who die by suicide or in the line of duty are honored and remembered. The project embodies the organization’s commitment that “no one fights alone, and no one is forgotten.”
The symbolism woven throughout the organization’s identity reflects its mission of transformation through adversity. The phoenix represents resurrection and rebirth, while broken chains symbolize freedom from trauma bonds. A lighthouse guides those lost in crisis, and the starfish recalls the principle that saving even one life creates meaningful change.
As natural disasters increase in frequency and severity, and communities face mounting challenges from violence and trauma, organizations like RISEUP Phoenix are filling critical gaps between traditional emergency response and long-term community healing. Their model of combining immediate crisis intervention with sustained support and education represents an evolution in how communities can build resilience before disaster strikes and recover more effectively when it does.
The organization continues to seek volunteers, donors, and sponsors to expand its reach and impact. With teams ready to deploy for the next crisis and educational programs designed to build resilience before tragedy strikes, they’re working to ensure that communities have the tools and support they need in their darkest moments and beyond.
